SOUND:   Song of a Humpback Whale

These are three JPG shots with John Ferricks' XL1 with Optex Fujinon Lens on the 4th July 1999 Alaska.

Here some reactions from visitors:

Hi all, I saw some of the shots from Alaska and it really looked great. Also met with Jan van der Meer (very nice guy). See you all next year at IBC. Cheers, Robert Lindqvist Lindqvist Radio TV AB Sweden

How beautiful! From one whale watcher to another: I should live so long to get anywhere near as good a shot of a whale breach. Congratulations! John Burkhart MAUI Community College Hawaii

"The Stately Runner"

InteriorHosting just 4 to 6 guests, the Stately Runner provides you a truly personal service, intimacy and an up-close shared adventure that does justice to the wonders of Alaska. When you're not filming or photographing on a wilderness beach, carefully watched by your private-teacher or motoring through icebergs by Zodiac taking top shots of seals and eagles, you're ensconced in comfort and style aboard the yacht.

The Stately Runner is yours to enjoy, from the boat launch at the stern to the view deck on top, from a leather couch in the wheelhouse to the comfortable couches in the window-wrapped main salon.

There's never a wait, never a line - you're truly a guest on board. No charge for premium beer and wine, no charge at the bar at all. No charge for private video-courses, no charge for activities like fishing or kayaking lessons, no charges for shore excursions everything is included from first to last, until your discretionary gratuity at disembarkation.

It's a liberating experience, an expansive sense of freedom. Take your pick of the fishing gear - learn to paddle a kayak pour over the Captain's charts. In the evening, enjoy a sociable cocktail and a lavish dinner, served casually with grace and a smile. Then slip on the plush terry robe in your stateroom, pour yourself a snifter of brandy, and have a look at the video-shots you took and do some quick editing or head up for a hot-tub under the stars in another beautiful forested fjord. The perfect end to a perfect day!

From your arrival at the airport to a fond farewell ten days later, you're a pampered guest aboard the yacht. Everything's included from first to last - gourmet meals; premium wine, beer and liquor; kayak, Zodiac and fishing excursions; private shore tours and airport or hotel transfers. We appreciate the pure Alaska fresh air and it is obvious that all will respect that smoking is not allowed on board.

Exploring in the wilderness

The Alaska Video Seafari quickly leaves from the 'touristed' Inside Passage, and stays out of the mainstream. Wind through narrow channels inhabited only by sea otters and eagles, halibut and crab. This is the Alaska of salmon fishermen and totem pole carvers, of islands where sea lions outnumber humans, of beaches with a bear's footprint. The Alaska that only a yacht can show you. And expect surprises throughout the trip. Not everything is preplanned - rigid - nailed right down to the minute. "We haven't been in this bay this season - let's take a look!" Later a nearby fishing boat reports by radio, "Orcas off the Stephans Passage," - so we turn and head for the whales! It's called "flexibility," a perfect attitude for yachting.

Filming as close as close can be,

On pictures like this  the bear seems to be pretty close, but its done with an extremely long shot lense. We go as close as close and safe we can be. Pepper spray is always at hand!  English well-known Nature Photographer Andy Rouse also organizes special Seafari Photo trips on the Stately Runner.  With Jan's video group, photographers are welcome also but videographing is his speciality. Hear also on your directional camera-mic the low roaring of a colony of sea lions. Or borrow one of the super shotgun microphones. Film the soaring of an eagle overhead. Feel the cooling spray of a waterfall. Trail your fingers in salty water over the side of an ocean kayak. Listen for the orcas and singing whales. They will give a live peformance (through loudspeakers) on deck. John as an audio-expert built special underwater microphones. Also record the sound  from a crackling rumble of a calving glacier. Put your videocamera on 16:9 widescreen mode or try one of our anamorphic lenses. Absorb the utter peace of a misty morning in a quiet cove, a steaming cup of coffee in hand. It's these details, the intimate encounters with nature, that really bring the drama and grandeur of Alaska alive on one of your best video productions ever.

As active as you want to be

Your Alaska Video Seafari is a 'hands on' experience for the mind and the body. Guidebooks and charts abound on the ship. The Expedition Leader provides insight and expertise through daily talks. When the vessel is under way, you're videoteacher is also scanning the waters for wildlife and top-locations.  CANON Inc. provides Jan on all the trips with the best possible high tech binoculars; a hard to spot bear, seal or deer cannot escape from his or your camera-lens!  It certainly is a save feeling that you'll always come home with the best possible shots, even if your camera has problems!   Plot your progress, learn the latest tricks on filming wildlife. Kayak in a placid cove, or Zodiac shots among impossibly blue icebergs. Drop a line for halibut, walk on a wilderness beach, record and explore a boardwalked fishing town on foot, or soak in a natural hot spring on Baranoff Island. Or just relax on board - it's your vacation!

With interesting fellow guests.

You'll be sailing with other sophisticated, active travelers; people with a sense of adventure and interest to enjoy filming and photographing. People who appreciate quality; who don't like crowds; who appreciate the all-inclusive policy. People with an active, engaging interest in the world around them. People like you, perhaps! Or you bring your own party of four or six friends, family or club.

An enthusiastic and experienced crew.

As not just one but two pods of orcas approach, John Ferrick boasts, "On an Alaska Yacht Safari we don't just do everything, we overdo it!" And with flexible scheduling and an enthusiastic crew, opportunities to enjoy the highlights of Alaska waters indeed abound. You'll enjoy chatting with the skipper in the wheelhouse and tasting his treasures as the gourmet chef. Plus his wife Sharyn always eager to help you create the vacation of a lifetime.

Encountering wildlife.

Native Alaskans have a saying: "When the tide is out, the table is set." And that's certainly true for Alaska's bears, fond of mussels and salmon as they are. Always keep an eye on the shoreline - bears are abundant throughout these waters. And to film one close, we approach one by Zodiac or Kayak - carefully, quietly – it is an awe-inspiring moment.

Filming natural wildlife.

Nature in all its beauty is our major focus. Bald eagles, proud in the tall trees, pigeon guillemots, kittiwakes, perhaps a few puffins - it's a birdwatcher's paradise. When humpbacks or orcas appear, we'll stop to enjoy the show. John makes a conscious effort to maximize wildlife viewing, always, however, with respect and restraint. Jan will activate a specially designed outboard low-angle camera platform for absolutely fabulous point of views.

A warm welcome.

A warm welcome from the Otter boys will not be exeptional when visiting a harbour from another village with native Tlingit, Haida or Tsimshian people. These original inhabitants of the Inside Passage were renowned for their rich culture and their distinctive arts, and blessedly their artistic traditions are still thriving. The totems, galleries and museums of cities like Sitka or Juneau are very interesting, but you'll also be visiting genuine Native villages.

The first trip is planned from Sitka to Juneau  June/July

The second trip is planned from Juneau to Sitka in July

Please Book Early

The most important reason to reserve early is that space is very limited. So please show your interest as soon as possible.
