Comments by Global-DVC founder Jan van der Meer:

This is one of the bests at this moment! (spring 1999). A great cam. Multipurpose. Use it for all kind of productions. Many inexperienced owners will need time to explore the many possibilities. Just like the VX1000 this cam. has everything in it to make shots look like if they were taken with a 10 times more expensive professional camera! I even like it better than the VX1000 in many ways. Only the place of the mic, so the sound quality needs an update by putting an extra mic (ECM S 959 is perfect) on top! Also consider TRV890 it cheaper. PD100A is a more professional DV-CAM and more suitable for the everyday job!  I love it! Visit our special classes (group or private) in Holland! We teach you all you need to know for superb shots.

This is the TRV900 DV-CAM version. The PD100  has more! First impression: it is a great camera for many purposes. Plays DV - DVcam PAL or NTSC. Has all futures TRV900 + XLR adapter, as shown here by Miss Luca from Sony Japan at IBC '98 Amsterdam. (Actually shot this JPEG with TRV900!)  Exellent company for Steadicam Jr.

Mvc00003.jpg (166717 bytes)Have a look at our production tests with PD100 in Indonesia febr. 1999. The quality in low-light is better than VX1000. Note the 959 at the top!

Sony will not sell   XLR mic.adapter  and wide-lens at consumer market  now. (may be later?)  We did get perfect results with our XLR-PRO black box  underneath TRV900 (or VX1000)  made by Studio 1 Productions! (We have these in stock!)  This one has 2 XLR's. The one on top of PD100  only one!

OTHER DV RESOURCES/ LINKS

As you can see at the Nr.1 TRV900 Site of John Beale!  David Dennis also has the very informative Video Production FAQ. There is an excellent FAQ regarding DV tape formats and many technical details here. Christopher Spry has a very useful collection of links for DV cameras and editing equipment. If your're planning a multi-camera shoot with live switching, Fred Wilharm's site can help. There is another TRV900 FAQ from "macman". There is a TRV900 forum based in Europe (Global-DVC), focusing mostly on the TRV900E (PAL model). Javier Echarte has put up a Spanish-language page about DV camcorders. Chris Reijnen has started a mailing list for the TRV900. There are several video forums of interest at videouniversity.com.  The 900 is sometimes compared to the Sony VX1000, which you can find out more about here. On the higher-priced end is the Canon XL1 with a great user page here. There is a page comparing the XL1 and PD100 (the PD100 uses a different tape format, comes with more accessories and is a different color, but is otherwise very similar to TRV900). There is an improved PD100AP coming, according to this post at this Global-DVC board.

NEW IDEAL TRV890/ TRV900/ PD100

DVC MICROPHONE ADAPTER

FOR ALL MICROPHONES ON TOP

Dsc00002.jpg (90345 bytes)

A new perfect set-up for Sony ECM959 microphone above TRV890, TRV900 and PD1000. This special DVC mic.adapter is suitable for all cam.mics. It can bend, kills all camera movement sounds. The mic is 'hang up' in several elastic bands. We like it better than the Beyerdynamics one which can't bend and is too close above wide-lenses!

Also suitable for Sennheiser/ Beyerdynamics mics.

UNDERWATER TIPS & LINKS

Tradewind's Underwater Video Filming Tips
Tradewind Communication in New Zealand has developed lot's of tips that range from as simple as entering the water with the camera, to using lights, to dealing with the "big deep blue" colors underwater. Worth taking a look if you are going to be getting wet.

Under Water with Ikelite
"We were doing so many custom installations for this sophisticated camera that it is now available as a stock housing."

Under Water with Sea & Sea
This thing looks so cool, people will think your James Cameron working on Titanic II.

Under Water with EWA-Marine
This one I've used used many times. White water rafting, shooting a triathalon and down a water slide. It is by far the most economical of the water housings I have seen. If you are as fascinated by shooting in water as I am, this might be worth the investment. Around $400.00 is what I've been told.

Under Water with MK2
"Die-cast single aluminum block type-approved by the French Navy for its exceptional robustness, reliability and ease of use."  Looks expensive.

Under Water with Seacam DV/S-1
Another one!?! What this country needs is another good VX-1000 under water housing for around $2,500.00.

Under Water with Light and Motion
The Sting Ray housing for the VX-1000 requires that you take the microphone off for the camera to fit in the housing.

Under Water with Gates
All aluminum housing for the Sony DCR-VX1000 camera.

Under Water with Ocean Brite
Bright yellow polyurethane---inside & out with full electronic control.

New Photoprinter for Memory Sticks

headphone.JPG (66584 bytes)

Coming memorystick player!

Memory Stick media is an ultra-small flash storage media that is designed to share data, text, graphics, video, audio or digital images from a camcorder and transfer to a printer, PC, camera, display or other products in the future.

Sony announced a number of connectivity solutions to help consumers transfer digital images from the DCR-PC100 with Memory Stick media. The new Memory Stick PC card adapter (MSAC-PC2) transfers high resolution still images to a notebook computer in seconds (approximately 450 KByte/s write, 880 KByte/s read speeds). The new Memory Stick floppy disk adapter (MSAC- FD1A) facilitates easy image transfer to a desktop PC. The supplied serial port interface (RS-232C) also connects the DCR-PC100 to a desktop PC.

Sony also announced a 64 MB capacity Memory Stick media. With an optional 64 MB Memory Stick media and the DCR-PC100, approximately 304 mega-pixel images can be saved or approximately 18 images with the supplied 4 MB Memory Stick media. Still images can be captured in mega-pixel or VGA (640 x 480) resolutions in super fine, fine or standard picture modes.

Memory Stick media is available now in 4, 8 and 16 MB capacities. The 32 and 64 MB media will be available in October and December for $109.95 and $189.95 (MSRP), respectively. In addition, the Memory Stick PC card adapter (MSAC-PC2) will be available in October for $79.95 (MSRP), and the Memory Stick floppy disk adapter (MSAC-FD1A) will be available in November for $99.95 (MSRP).

Pity everyone is designing its own memory size stick! Why not all choose a standard!)
