Even though the this camera does not have the
option of disabling the AGC, it works wonderfully well and does not have any of the
pumping or breathing problems of past designs. I have heard of no complaints about the AGC
from anyone I have spoken with.
FIGHTING FOR NEW CANON XM1

IBC 99 was again very interesting. Even during
this very hot weekend many visitors enjoyed this show. The new Century and Optex
anamorphic lenses we will test this week on several camera's and let you know the
results. With great interest many visitors had a look at our Alaska Video Seafari
tests with the Optex/ Fujinonlens specially designed for Canon XL1.
Brand new Canon XM1 PAL (GL1) was
a big attraction and surprise to many. Yes it has DV-IN! Lens 20x optical (4.2-84mm) is

Enables Camcorders
to go Widescreen
Now small camcorders with 4:3 CCDs can capture 16:9 images without sacrificing
resolution. Century's new 16:9 Widescreen Adapter fits cameras with 49 to 58mm lens fronts
such as Sony VX-1000, VX-9000, DCR-TRV900, DSR-PD100 and DSR200, as well as the Panasonic
AG-EZ1U and AG-EZ30U.
Some switchable camcorders work by effectively masking the
top and bottom of the chip, resulting in a loss of resolution. The Century Widescreen
Adapter instead squeezes the 16:9 image onto the 4:3 chip, utilizing every pixel —
for a higher resolution image.  When viewed on a 16:9 monitor, the resulting image automatically
spreads out to fill the frame. Starting from the wide end, the shooter can zoom 1/2 to 2/3
of the range, depending upon the amount of light available.The Widescreen Adapter is ideal
for companies as they move into the 16:9 format. For example, the BBC has incorporated the
Adapter into general production. Andy Benjamin of the BBC reports that "with the
Adapter, we're able to do low-cost shooting for our new digital widescreen channels."
The Widescreen Adapter allows the network to use their VX1000s to shoot widescreen in
situations that require smaller, handheld cameras — such as
producer-shot interviews or underwater shooting. Price $795,= Century's Digital Series
Rectangular Sunshade/Filterholder slips onto the front of the Widescreen Adapter and
accepts one Series 9 drop-in filter.
